New Guitar Day…..Suhr Content

6 months ago by trpullen in (0 comments)

Shout out to John Suhr and his team at Suhr Guitars. What a fine piece of custom building. Thanks to them and Mojo’s Music (in beautiful downtown Edwardsville, IL) for getting this guitar to me. It looks JUST like one I designed when I was about 18 years old.

This guitar is still my favorite S-style guitar on the planet.  I am also 99.9% sure it would be my desert island guitar.

A New Brother for Mike Campbell

I recently sold a few guitars that were not getting any play time and bought this one. It is a Rickenbacker 660/12 string. I have never had much luck playing the 360/12 because of the narrow neck. This one has a little wider string spacing. Wish me luck. It should arrive in a week or so.

I Love Technology….sometimes

3 years ago by trpullen in (0 comments)

I love my computers, TiVo and digitally enhanced stuff but when it comes to music, I am becoming more and more decidedly analog. I want my gear to be free of USB connections. Don’t get me wrong, I think the editing capability of the Line6 POD is really cool but the sound leaves something to be desired. OK, my iPod can keep it’s USB connection but that is where I draw the line.

I have been playing an Orange Rockerverb. Sold off my high tech guitars for things like the Duesenberg and ESP Vintage Plus guitars. We even found a 1964 Hammond B3 to add to the stable. There is nothing like it on the planet. The stars align when you get a read drum set, a nice guitar with a tube amp, an old P-bass and a Hammond all rockin’ together.

So, for now, you will still find me online and I am still the old .tom but…..musicially, I am a Luddite.

Musical Soul Searching

Who am I musically speaking? I am the sum of all that I have done in the past, maybe even everything I have heard. Some of that playing was rewarding, some just plain excruciating (for me and probably the audience). Anybody playing rock and roll these days who does not say they were influenced by The Beatles is lying. But Bob Dylan taught me that music can say something. The Clash and The Ramones showed me how to ROCK. Tom Petty (and especially those Heartbreakers) and Bruce Springsteen (WITH the E Street Band)…’nuff said! All the pre-”alt-country” bands of the 80s taught me to embrace my inner Johnny Cash. Finally U2 showed me that it is the sum of the parts, not the individuals that make the band. Four guys who don’t know the meaning of can’t, CAN be the best band in the world.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s. The music of those decades is at the core of who I am. I grew up in the suburbs in a totally stable family so I have little or no “teen angst” to deal with but for the life of me, I cannot shake my connection to punk rock. Why? I suspect it is because it is music that speaks to the core of me, reaches me at the primal level much like bluegrass or the blues does. There is an underlying virtuosity in punk rock that cannot be measured in the 4/4 rhythms and 3 chords. Learn to play tightly with others at that speed and you will be a champ.

NWLC 90 Days Later

4 years ago by trpullen in , (0 comments)

One of the sessions (Ross Parsley) mentioned to not implement any changes immediately upon returning from a conference. So….what stuck around 90 days later?

  • Excellence is important. Never at the expense of the message. All things for the Glory of God.
  • I gained a huge respect for Mark Roach’s writing and have started doing a few of his songs. Can’t wait to report them out to CCLI :)
  • Still need to spend some time making loops and try playing along with the band if for nothing other than improving timing
  • The most powerful moments were generated be people who were very in tune with what God wanted them to do. They knew what we needed and led us in a way that they were created to do.

One of our vocalists had been waiting for the congregation to respond before showing what she was feeling on stage. The conference helped her realize that she should act on what she is feeling and that really, we help give “permission” to the congregation. We are to model the worship experience.

Thanks to Marcos Witt, I have been using the word “worship pusher” lots. :) Thanks for that Marcos!

Is the world ready for a computer with no applications?

I have been giving a good bit of thought to running an experiment.  I am going to load up a machine with Ubuntu, make sure the WiFi Card is working, and go application free….OK, except my trusty install of Firefox.  I found a site where a guy lists all the Web 2.0 applications that he uses to do his daily work.  He has nothing but a Macintosh and (iWork…just in case the web goes down).  Kinda defeats the spirit of the “integrated Mac suite” but…hey, I am game for a little fun.

Check it out.
